PAUL MARTIN REPORTS:
I attended a very inspiring conference recently called
"Contemporary Issues in Mental Health" with the guest speaker
being a Professor of Psychiatry. My intention is not to give
you a précis of this conference, but only to say that modern
medicine places too much emphasis on the illness and not enough
attention is given to the individual burdened by that
illness.
I believe we should use that same attribute for individuals who
live with a disability – so often the individual is forgotten
about and the disability receives all the attention, or the
attention the individual receives is only sympathy (Oh poor
you!) and no real acknowledgment of the person's strengths or
potentials.
A Credo ForSupport
Do not
see my disability as the problem. Recognise that my
disability is an
attribute.
