Although the following
is accurate, the name is fictitious to protect the
persons true identity.
For several years I used
to pick Naomi up from home and transport her to the
support agency for day activities. Naomi was profoundly
disabled, suffering from Wretts Syndrome; she had minimal
bodily movement and spent all day in a wheel chair with
transfers to car and to bed each day for a rest; she was
completely dependent for all personal needs and lunch
could take more than one hour, spoon feeding a small pot
of yoghurt. Naomi was of very slight build, about 120cm
tall and only weighing about 30 kg. Naomi also suffered
from Epileptic seizures and at times could have several
petit mal seizures in one day, and also suffered extreme
bouts of painful constipation as well as the pain
experienced by her period complications. Although Naomi
could not move and could not speak it was very clear that
she understood everything she heard, in fact there was
uncertainty about her intellectual ability as a
definitive assessment had never been completed. But
despite her profound disability Naomi was very much an
individual and could clearly express her individuality,
one way of expressing her individuality was to refuse to
eat, this could last for several days at a time; Naomi
was adequately blessed with ample amounts of will power.
Naomi loved to visit the trendy ladies clothing shops and
do all the girly things with make-up and perfume etc, she
also loved to visit the library and enjoyed having a good
story read to her.
